Farming in the Algarve![]() Do you want to farm large tracts of land in the Algarve? We have access to over 100 hectares of land for cultivation. We have been offered more. We want to plant wheat, rape, jatropha trees, and anything else that the world needs, and that will bring us in a good return for our capital and hard work. We need farmers, as well as more investors. Our first option is simply to bring the land we already have available into cultivation and plant corn. That can be harvested next summer and sold on the open market for a profit. A more interesting option is to plant rape. Again, the land simply needs to be brought into cultivation, the seed planted, then harvested, milled to produce rapeseed oil, and the mush that is left over can be pressed into a cake which is sold for animal feed. All parts of the crop are harvested and sold for a much larger profit. Rapeseed oil can be used as a bio-fuel, it can also be used in cooking, and can be processed into various other commodities for which there is a ready and increasing market. Part of the land is very hilly and is unsuitable for planting corn or rape. This land will be used to plant jatropha trees. The nuts from the trees can be crushed to produce oil, which is also used for biofuel. We can start our farming venture in a small way and gradually expand the business over time. Alternatively we can open up the deal to members of the public, which will allow us to purchase more land, and ramp up our operations much more quickly, and take advantage of the savings which are to be had from a larger operation. Initially we are looking for people who want to farm the land. We can get local people to do the job, but I have to admit they are a bit lazy. If you look around the Algarve you will not see a single arable farm anywhere. There is derelict land in all directions. The owners are waiting for someone to offer them money for the land so it can be built on. There is corn growing in the Alantejo, and down in Morocco, but not in the Algarve. There are abandoned fig trees, and almond groves. No-one is cultivating these trees, or picking the fruit. There is so much wastage here. It could be otherwise. We have people offering us land, but we cant farm it ourselves, so we are looking for serious minded people who want to farm in a very pleasant climate. ![]() The Algarve is a very fertile land. My own patch grows oranges, lemons, peaches, apricots, apples, alforabas, corn, and grass. My neighbours grow gorgeous vegetables, and fruit (oranges, lemons, grapefruit, avocados, mangos, figs). You can even grow bananas here if you shelter them. Strawberries grow well and have a very long season. Most crops can achieve two seasons a year. ![]() The climate is mediterranean, which means temperatures dont go below -4C, and only very rarely touch that. We dont have snow, and any ice tends to form just before dawn in mid winter, and is gone by breakfast time. There is patchy rain for 8 months a year, and long hot summers that stretch into mid november. We average 300 days of glorious sunshine a year. ![]() The seasons are odd. The first spring starts in late september with the autumn rains, and the whole ground comes back to life. Daffodils flower from the beginning of december, and by the beginning of February the real spring is firmly in place with flowers on every side and the mimosa out everywhere. ![]() Summer usually starts at the beginning of may, and runs till the end of october. It's an ideal climate for growing. Is there anyone out there who wants to join us and who has some knowledge of farming? I was brought up on a farm, but I'm a bit rusty, and running the Unique website doesn't leave me much time. Let me know if you're interested? |
